MEDIA STUDENT
Unit 43 Production and Post Production For TV Level 3
This is our student film Dreamer, dreamer is about a young man named Vincent who dreams of playing for his dream football team, Bristol City. Unfortunately Vincent like the majority of us did not fulfill his dream and now it haunts him. At work or in his sleep it doesn't matter...the thought of playing for Bristol City fills his mind at all times and it's starting to take effect. For the worst.
The Treatment

The treatment is an explanation of what we hope to create, the treatment must contain all the information a partner of the project will need to know.
Dreamer shooting script

This is the shooting script for dreamer, it is written as a professional tv or movie script would be written. The script contains descriptive elements of scene such as what is happening, whether the scene is inside or outside, the weather and much more.
Dreamer Storyboard
Scenes 1,3&8

Dreamer storyboard, scenes 1,3&8; This is a blueprint for scenes 1,3&8 in our movie Dreamer. Though this is the final draft we left/excepted wiggle room with shots, with that being said we followed our plan as best as possible.
Scenes 2&7

Dreamer storyboard, scenes 2,2,7; This is the storyboard for the football scene and firing scene. These were simple to follow as we knew exactly what shots we wanted and knew the areas we'd be filming.
Scene 3

Dreamer storyboard, scene 3 (continuous); This is the storyboard for the continous scene where the main character Vince Lane walks through his house getting ready for work. This is the scene where we knew the most of our creative influences would shine through, specificly Edgar Wright.
Scenes 4,5&6

Dreamer storyboard, scenes 4,5&6; This is the storyboard layout of scenes 4,5 and 6 in our movie Dreamer. These scenes show Vincents commute to work after leaving his house.
Set Design
Only one scene applies to set design for us as it's the only scene we placed props in to further the narrative of a structure. The reason for this is all the other scenes were walk in film then walk out shots. The probs I'm talking about you can see in the bedroom scene of Dreamer, there are a couple of shots that display football trophies. They were props used as they are relevant to the story of Vincent Lane. Another prop used in the bedroom scene was the alarm clock as like the trophies it was not a part of the room before, we had to bring it in.
Reasoning for locations used; Bedroom: The bedroom used belongs to a member of the crew he at the time was 18 and a huge football fan, the outline of Vincent lane. We decided Vince's room would look a lot like are crew members so used his (This applies for the rest of Vince's house). The alley way: The alley way suited the means of travelling that Vince would do to get to the bus stop, it's very urban which is what we were looking for. The bus: This is a simple one, we needed to film on a bus as it is Vince's means of transport to work, so we got in contact with First Bus and they were willing to let us film on one of their brand new buses at their Lawrence Hill Bus Depot in Bristol. Vince's work place: We decided Vince would work in a call centre as it seemed like something someone who was dreaming of becoming a footballer would hate to do. Luckily boomsatsuma were willing to let us film in their offices for a but. The executive director of boomsatsuma even agreed to play a role in the film with very short notice.
Dreamer Shooting Schedule

Location Recces for short film Dreamer
Lawrence Hill Bus Depot

Location Recce for Lawrence Hill bus depot scene, we analysed the area and location for problems as well as a general profile of the location.
Location Recce for Greenbank RD and Ally way

Location Recce for Greenbank RD and Ally way we filmed at for Dreamer. The shots are of our character Vince going to work. In the location recce we analyse the areas we would be filming in from obstructions, permissions and more.
Location Recce for Packers Field

Location Recce for Packers field football scene. For this Recce we analysed the area for important information and obsticals that could effect the outcome of out film.

In these scrren shots I show the green screen outcome of our actor in a layered football stadium as well as colour corrections that went along with that. I also show the time line with it's visual and audio inputs. I also show the edited source screen and a part of our rushing loggs and how we stored footage.
Logging Rushes

These are all the shots from Vince's bedroom, we separated them into their own folder to make it easier to find them.

These were all the shots from the opening window shot, the football scene, other outside shots and Vince at his work place.
Analysing the film objectively
Production proccess: The production proccess for this film would have started of with the pre production material. We started off with a script, the script created entails the story and relevant information for the story. After that a treatment would have been made which essentially is a proposal for the film to give all the information needed to potentual partners of the creative proccess such as producers. After the pitch got approved the other pre production material would have been created such as location recces, risk assesments, shooting schedule, set design and storyboard. After the filming is done the rest of the production becomes pre production. With the production a few days were re-shot due to creative differences which effected the prodiction proccess as other things needed to be pushed back.
Decisions made: The decisions made would have involved locations to film on as well as dates, times, equipment ect. Alot of decisions involving the filming would be easier to make due to the shooting script and storyboard being avalible for the filmmakers.
Revisions made: Throughout the crative proccess the crew got involved in some creative differences due to lighting situations in scenes. This made the proccess of filming extremely difficult but having disscusions and looking over the pre production materials as well as getting feeback from an outside source made the team able to continue with the filming and complete the scenes.
Technical qualities: A lot of equipment was crutial to the making of this film and had many roles throughout. The first obvious equipment would be cameras, two kinds of cameras were used for the creating of the film DSLR 70 D's and XA20. These cameras were used for different reasons and purposes on the set, the 70 D's were used for static shots throughout where the XA20's were used for tracking and non stationary shots.
With the cameras tripods were used with the 70 D's for a steady shot. Alon with the tripod a make shift slider was used for the backwards tracking shot in the football stadium.
A light kit was also used on the set in order to create a brighter setting when the natural lighting was too dark for the cameras. Everytime lights were used they were used just enought to mimic real life lighting in that specific situation.
Aesthetic qualities: Focusing on the house of the main character Vince, the layout and content of house was very important as we wanted it to look like a young man lived in it. For example the bedroom on Vince belongs to a meber of the crew who is 18 and a massive football fan, so naturally that setting would suit Vince very well. This applies for the rest of the house too. For Vinces work space it was decided that he'd be a call direcotr in a call centre, for this we used boomsatsuma offices as they aesthetically fit the bill for a call centre a young man could work in. Our special effects all served a certain asthetic purpose. For example, the whip pans used in the film were in place to show a significant difference in time from one shot to the next an example of us using this is when our lead charcter Vince is walking down an alley was, as he walks out of shot the camera whips to Vince stood at a bus stop. From this we can gather that Vince has walked from that Alley to the bus stop while skipping the journey between which would have wasted screen time. Our screen screen played the largest role as it shows our lead character in a football stadium playing, this was used as we want to show how vivid Vince's dreams of playing are. He is not only dreaming of playing football but is dreaming of playing in massive stadiums with the comentators saying his name and the crowd screaming for him. For the last special effect 'the rewind' this has the biggest effect in my opinion as when we watch the film that is the only moment where we realise something isn't right. As the video rewinds showing Vince being pulled from the dream we too are pulled from that narrative, it takes a shift and when we realise what has happened the previous special effects make sense, for example we then realise that the whip pans were scews in time as we are not viewing real life, we are viewing a dream.
Proposed Scheduling time: I believe that this film would best suit BBC One or BBC Two, the reasoning for this is the visuals and story behind the film are very clean cut, they show nothing visualy, verbaly or politically vilent or indecent. The time slot for this film I imagine would be best suited for later in the evening just before the soaps start or inbetween them. The reason for this is it is when everyone is getting ready for the soaps to come on and want to watch something to tune them in other than adverts. This 4 minutes plus film would be that perfect ice breaker for a lot of viewers. With good feeback from the public for the film it could open up new posibilities for BBC One and BBC Two like ahving 5 minute films/soaps between the main soaps.
Areas for improvement within the production: Areas for improvment in the production would have to be with just following the agreed material and not having creative differences. Whenever we diagreed we should have all turned to the pre production material and worked with what that said to the best of our abilities.
